Tips to learn the Cyrillic alphabet

14.11.2023

To learn Cyrillic alphabet can be challenging, but with a little bit of effort and some fun techniques, you’ll be reading and writing in Cyrillic in no time!

Here are some tips for you if you want to learn the Cyrillic alphabet:

  1. Start with the basics: The Cyrillic alphabet has 33 letters, so don’t try to learn them all at once. Begin with the letters that look like the ones you already know in the Latin alphabet, such as “A,” “K,” “M,” and “T.”
  2. Associate Cyrillic letters with familiar objects: For example, the letter “ч” looks like an upside-down chair, so you can remember it as the “chair” letter.
  3. Learn some Russian tongue twisters: Not only are they fun to say, but they’ll also help you practice your pronunciation of the Cyrillic letters. Карл у Клары украл кораллы, а Клара у Карла украла кларнет. (Klara ukrala u Karla Korally, a Karl u Klary ukral klarnet.)
  4. Remember, the Cyrillic letter “С” makes the ‘S’ sound in Russian, which is sometimes pronounced the same way as the letter ‘C’ in English. One example of the ‘Сс’ sound in Russian is the word “самолёт” (samolyot), which means “airplane”. The first letter ‘C’ in this word is pronounced as the ‘S’ sound in English.
  5. Sing the alphabet song: Just like in English, there is a song that goes with the Cyrillic alphabet. Singing it out loud will help you remember the letters better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdm1iOIvBNA

Remember, consistent practice and patience are key when learning a new language. Celebrate small achievements, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes—they’re an essential part of the learning process.
