On November 18th, 1918, the Republic of Latvia proclaimed its statehood. On this day, Latvians lay flowers at the Freedom Monument and spend time with their loved ones.
This year, Riga’s streets and cafes will be particularly buzzing with a special atmosphere around the city for Latvia’s birthday! In the evening, the president will address the nation followed by celebratory fireworks, enriched with concerts and other events all around Riga.
But not just Latvia will be celebrating its centennial birthday, the whole world will be celebrating together with us:
For example, on November 18th, Niagara Falls in Canada and the 800-year-old Castle Cornet castle in Guernsey (UK) will be illuminated in the colors of the Latvian flag! 😍
As you celebrate, please also enjoy the Staro Rīga Light Festival, where Riga’s buildings, squares, bridges, and monuments will be brought to life by talented visual artists from all over the world!
